Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, GS-09 in the Federal Service. Specialized Experience is the experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform the duties of the position successfully, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Qualifying specialized experience for this position are: 1) Experience processing FOIA requests for public release and working with provisions of FOIA, and other pertinent laws, Executive Orders, court decisions, and precedents pertaining to information access and release. 2) Experience in applying Section 508 accessibility standards and using standard assistive devices, accessibility software, and automated identification testing tools. 3) Experience providing reading services from documents that routinely contain charts, tables, images, complex legal terms and language. OR, You can qualify based on education in lieu of Specialized Experience by Possessing a PH.D. or equivalent Doctoral Degree; or, Possessing 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree; or, Possessing an LL.M., if related. OR, You can qualify combining education and experience. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level. Only graduate education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be used to qualify applicants for positions at grades GS-9 and GS-11. (When crediting education that requires specific course work, prorate the number of hours of related courses required as a proportion of the total education to be used.)

As a Government Information Specialist (Visual Assistant), you will perform the following duties which are not all-inclusive: Provides remediation services for Word, PDF, and Excel documents that may contain redactions, images, and are unable to apply Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software. Provides reading services, as needed, at varying speeds and levels of complexity for extended periods of time in a clear tone from documents that routinely contain charts, tables, images, complex legal terms and language. Describes visually complex components of various types of media, including video, image and print documents, without the use of visually focused terms. Utilizes standard assistive devices, accessibility software, automated identification testing tools to analyze, assess, and re-mediate software products, tools and materials. Consults with the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) to ensure that websites, applications, and other electronic communications products comply with Section 508 requirements. Troubleshoots agency systems and platforms to promote overall accessibility.
